Daul Kim

Exactly three years ago this day, Daul Kim (20 years old) was found dead in her apartment. Suicide, they said. I, myself, had only discovered her blog a couple days before her death and was quite shocked. Having heard that, I went back and read the entire blog. Then it didn’t seem so sudden after all.

There was a lot of speculation and grey area around her death. Many thought that since she was so high up in her career as a model, she was afraid she would fall. Another theory was that she was already self-harming herself (the name of her blog was I like to fork myself), and just couldn’t take it anymore.

Whatever the reason, Daul Kim remains as one of my five most favourite / influential people. I can relate, from her taste in minimal trance, to her love of Chrome Hearts. In any case, I thought it was only fitting to share some of the incredible works she has done. Daul, may you rest in peace.

Butterfly Effect

So to contrast with D's shoot, I decided to go with a cooler palette. Since the main colours of her shoot consisted of red (which flatters her skin tone), I opted for blue (which flatters mine). The eye makeup was definitely inspired by those magical butterflies you see in movies…the ones where they leave a trail of shimmer whenever they flutter their wings. Oh and yeah, the head wrap turned out to look like a towel and the white shirt turned out to look like a bathrobe. But please don’t mind it. Focus on those butterflies please :).

PS: Applying creative makeup on yourself is legit harder than I expected.

100th Window

We suddenly had this enormous creative motivation to do a post. We had agreed on fierce as a concept beforehand, but then as I was putting the makeup on Doris...things sort of changed and we just went with the flow and improvised.

Butterflies started to randomly inspire me. And not just any kind, but Monarch butterflies in particular. You know, the poisonous and colourful kind HAHA!

As I have mentioned countless times, Doris' unique features can bring out any type of makeup stunningly. Of course, it's more difficult on monolids, but once you get it, no words can describe how well the makeup comes out. I started off by using a black eye shadow to outline the butterfly wings on the outer edges of the eyes. I kept blending inwards to get a gradient effect. After getting the right shape, I used a liquid liner to define it even more. Then to make the eyes even more 3D, I popped in a shade of gold from the Too Faced Sweet Indulgences palette. Make sure to use Urban Decay's primer potion to make the colours stand out more! Afterwards I dabbed a bit of eyelash glue on lids to stick on some nail confetti. The lip shade was kept a subtle red color, and the face was contoured with a warm color from the same palette. Lastly, highlighter was used generously for a shimmery prismatic effect.

The only thing I did this shoot: my nails and my hair. I took forever putting it into a decent bun, but you can't really tell because the headscarf blocks it. Basically, I just assumed my regular post as a ragdoll hahaha.

The title 100th Window is one of the albums from one of my all-time favourite groups Massive Attack if you were to listen to any song on that, I'd recommend Small Time Shot Away. Anyways, we'll be getting together a bit more now, so expect another post from us soon. Have a great week everyone!
