Hi!

Summer is almost gone and regrettably I didn’t end up enjoying it much. I’m also a bit behind in terms of posting as well…work got a bit too crazy. I haven’t been shopping much except for acquiring a rose gold watch (finally) by Marc  Jacobs (Katy I blame you! lol) and recently, a coat for fall (which you might see in later ootds, but I prefer makeup posts more tbh).

And yes… I know my hair is getting really long but I was hoping to trim it after my cousin got married because I wanted to curl it hehe.

However…makeup wise. I have been constantly lusting over the Suqqu and Tom Ford collections. The quality of Suqqu lipsticks...let’s just say they are in their own league. If you try one, you won’t go back to anything else I guarantee. They are soo pigmented and creamy. The color selection though is rather “safe” but as I find with most high-end brands, keeping it “natural” is key. I’ll do a post on my Suqqu collection later on. But here, take a look at the Suqqu 2013 fall collection at Selphia. And the Tom Ford collection with two trios, one called “She Wolf” here at the beauty look book, and the other “In the Pink” here. God they’re just so pretty. Oh, and I might as well add the Lunasol 2013 Summer one too, by the lovely Reika sadly it’s limited edition and sold out everywhere :(.

P.s. Has anyone picked up anything from the Marc Jacobs range at Sephora?

P.s.s. I had no idea my smile is so goofy HAHA

Man I promise, I'm so self conscious

Hey guys haha. Wow it's been awhile since I last made a post. I have no excuse, I'll just come out and say it... I'm a workaholic. And no, it's not just your computer screen, there's still snow in April, albeit it's finally melting so I can get some much needed vitamin D.

Finally, all the years of not getting enough sleep has it made near impossible to feel energized or awake.. can't overcome the sleep deficit haha. Alright guys, piano time, I'll catch you later ~

I used to feel my luck was bled from me at seventeen

I didn't even notice until the blood started dripping from my left hand that I had brushed ever so faintly against my spiked litas. I am less squeamish with blood nowadays so I cleaned up all good. Just a couple years ago, I would start losing strength in my hands, and some knee-bucklnig action would have been involved. But taking this picture was slightly messy...okay enough of that imagery.

I went with a friend to watch some Chinese cultural show where I was promised by my teacher of extraordinariness of epic proportions, and that this celebrated group never comes to Edmonton (once in a lifetime opportunity) so I should go etc. He hyped it so much, we went and...was thoroughly disappointed. Probably because none of the actual performers had their own equipment (everything rented out locally last minute due to containers still being in Winnipeg). I guess the show had to keep going to save face...but there was this contortionist though, always a highlight in my opnion.

Some completely irrelevant music: 1, 2, 3

P.s. No idea where my hat came from, showed up as a package from china with my name on it Lol

With a splash of mint

I figured I haven't posted in a while, so here it is! For the longest time, mint green had always been my favorite color. There's just something really refreshing and pure about that color, and it never fails to make me fall in love with it over and over again. So I've been rummaging through my closet in search for some colors that are more suited for Spring, since it's getting a bit warmer here in Canada. And so there I've found it. Hanging delicately in my messy closet is a light, leopard print scarf in mint! Pair it up with a white flowy blouse, and there you have it. An ensemble that's refreshing to the eye.

Oh yeah, so for the past few weeks I've literally been drowning with the massive amount of things to do in life. My eye bags were pretty much as big as golf balls. There's one thing that kept me going, and I'm going to share that with all you beautiful people out there:

"I can do all this through him who gives me strength." -Phillipians 4:13

Keep smiling, everyone! You are beautiful just the way you are =)

So high I cannot feel the fire

So my hellbounds came in finally yay! I don't know why I waited so long, I was thinking maybe the black ones will finally be in stock again, but nope. It was an unfortunate testament of online shopping, but oh well, I ended up getting them in tan instead. I'm so glad they're platform heels and not anything else, because my archless feet won't be able to handle heels this high. So yeah, I've been eating out nearly everyday this week and as someone sensitive to smell, I get so bothered when my clothes smell like the restaurant. The second I get home, I'm changing clothes and laying them openly in areas where the smell will dissipate. Sigh this manic behaviour...will I ever change?

All I know is

A couple days ago, I woke up feeling like I could solve the logic problems of the world. I had such mental clarity. Too bad I made absolutely no use of it. I don't know if it's because I've been reading Steve Jobs' biography before I sleep? But anyways, it's a pretty good read if you're interested in the man. How I wish I could own the stage and capture the audience like Jobs. I would say... he's a hippiefied hitler. I often find myself wanting to have knowledge of everything intact. It bugs me so much when a book briefly mentions someones name or a theory in passing. I used to sticky note every page that had something I wanted to research later, but I never got back to it. Too lazy now, I just download the epub version and screenshot that. But still..so ocd.

Trying to have a mental database of everything is probably not the best idea because I have the worst memory when it comes to everything but birthdays. Speaking of which, I had dinner with my grandma the other day, asked her if she liked the card I gave her in place of not being able to show up to her birthday dinner due to work. She told me she threw it in the trash that morning and to not waste money on such things..gg. As for today, I ended up watching the identity thief, and the song bad girls by m.i.a. played numerous times in it and due to my adhd, all I could notice was how lackluster the original is compared to the cover by Lydia Paek.

P.s. Wow I just noticed how evident all my bruises on my legs are...hope you're all having a good reading week though. :)

Chic with Floral

Hello all you beautiful people out there! I think both Doris and I deserve a cookie cause we've been updating so often. Just kidding. Anyways, so the other day I posted a super feminine makeup look. Today, I felt like wearing something girly...but at the same time I also wanted to add some masculinity to the overall look. So why not mix the two? For the longest time, I always thought that wearing a dress would portray the image of a frail, vulnerable girl. However, add a sweater and a motorcycle jacket on top, and there you have it. The overall look is chic, comfortable, and stylish. Perfect for Valentine's Day! Speaking of Valentine's Day, I am legit craving Lindor's white chocolate right now. Why am I such a sucker for sweets?

Take a walk, take a rest, taste the rest

A couple days ago, for the first time in my life, I met another Doris. She was a lovely old lady, and told me that seeing a younger person named Doris made her feel less ancient. My dad actually named me after Doris Day (who was an actress and singer and now at 90 years old is still an animal rights activist) who was named after Doris Kenyon (a silent screen star). To this day, I am still under the impression that my name is rather grandmotherly but I am sure, had I lived in the 30s, it would have been a popular name at the time.

On an entirely different topic...I have to thank my friend for introducing me to Kiehl's Olive Fruit Oil shampoo and conditioner. I was having exceptionally dry hair/scalp this winter and this really revitalized my hair and soothed my seemingly inflamed scalp. She also added that it was quite popular with asians, I can see why! So yep, if anyone else is having this problem, I highly suggest you test this line out!

P.s. I'm terrified of walking my dog because of all the coyote sightings in the area behind my house :(.

Tokyo Jazz Freak

Tok Tok Tokyo!
 Jazz freak~

Not that I know much about jazz, but this song by 45 has been one of my favourite songs for a long time now. Recently rediscovered it and have been putting it on repeat ever since. And well, since the world is ending, you should all listen to it ;). Also, thanks to Kim for freezing with me outside to snap a couple pictures haha. Oh, and while I was buying a couple of movies for my dad, I got carded cause well…I guess I don’t look over 18. Sigh. I guess I'll take it compared to looking 15 a year ago. Anyways, just incase we won’t be able to update this week, Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone!

P.s. I kept delaying this post because we both thought we were able to fit a makeup shoot this week, but alas :(.

Who is she?

So currently I'm in the process of getting owned by exams. Save me.

Anyways, I've never been exactly a neon type of girl. In fact, if anyone were to take a peek at my closet, they will most likely find black, black, more black, nudes, more nudes, and the rare colored hoodie. Recently (this past summer), I've been super attracted to neon colored accessories. I was eyeing the Cambridge Satchel in either neon pink or neon yellow/green, but being the poor uni student that I am, I made a promise to myself to NOT make impulse purchases. Yay for me, I managed to pull through =). However, I did come across this bag by Material Girl (exclusively at The Bay) that's quite similar in color and style to the Cambridge Satchel. It was $45, with 30% off, and I had another coupon back then that gave me another discount, and it somehow ended up to be a little under $25. So for anyone who's looking for a cheaper option of the Cambridge Satchel, Material Girl it is (they got it in neon pink too). After all, what's the fun of shopping without the bargain and deals?!

Tip: Neon colors against black or white attires will definitely give the entire outfit more attitude.

Good luck with exams everyone!

Le soleil est près de moi

So yeah these pictures were taken in -28 degrees celsius. Probably not too smart on my part...

While watching tv yesterday, I saw an elephant mother give birth to a dead calf, it was so gross & sad yet I was too curious to turn away.  The rest of the elephants in the enclosure gave the mother space to mourn and stuff :(.

It reminded me of my first time at a zoo. My grandma kept stepping on chicken poop, my mom complained about the heat, and my dad forgot to close the goat pen and more than half ran off with the staff chasing. But that’s a story for another time.

P.s. So sorry for the lack of updates! Carmen and I have been pretty busy with exams and with shorter days it’s so hard to find enough light to shoot :(.

Cold Dust Girl

Because of my new teacher, I have been scrutinizing piano as a whole so differently.  It’s so much more abstract in an arranged way. That probably makes no sense but, most of the practicing happens mentally now as I try and get rid of the many years worth of bad habits. There really is no real reason for me to play the instrument if I don’t get the thought process right given the other variables will then provide distractions. And I still have a hard time relaxing myself (but that goes for everything e.g. getting a massage).

On a different note, I have plan to skateboard this summer...wait what?  It’s a little late but I don’t want to look back decades down the road and feel remorse and general discontent on missing out on something I wanted to do years and years ago. People that know me will probably say I’m crazy given my clumsy nature and weakening bones, but I think people see me as I present myself to them.  And how I see it, everyone knows a different side of me. Put what everyone knows of me together, and voila you have me. Just kidding.

P.s. I’m not really looking forward to Heart of the Swarm as much as I thought I would. Probably because I didn’t even ladder that much on Wings of Liberty.

P.s.s.  Look at this: Guerlain’s Turandot. It’s super pretty and the name is chosen so well! (I can’t believe I have become this girly)

Girl in the Mirror

So after weeks and weeks of non-stop assignments, projects, and exams, I’m finally done with all that was thrown at me. Well…not all, but most. Anyways, here’s an OOTD from me after what seemed like a million years. Felt a bit on the street side of fashion today so here’s an outfit featuring pretty much most of my favourite colours: black, white, taupe, baby pink, pastel mint, and silver. The thing I like most about street fashion is you can be comfortable in your own skin with whatever you choose to wear. It's simply a style that's...you! I just love the combination of baby pink with baby blue or mint. Oh and earlier this week, Doris and I decided to walk through Whyte ave during one of the coldest days in Edmonton. Being such dorks, we “forgot” that we would probably be freezing our butts off since we would be outside half of the time. So therefore we decided to hop right into Loft 82, and each grabbed ourselves one of their super warm toques! I was debating between a cream shade or black. I guess it’s obvious as to which colour I decided to stick with. Guess which shade D got. She’ll probably be wearing it for our next post. Everyone else up here in the north, stay warm!

PS: I should really consider cleaning my room one day. My carpet is starting to disappear…

PPS: The leather bracelet I'm wearing is pretty much one of my all time favourites. I think I will seriously wear it until it literally starts coming apart.

Lofticries

All the picture colors turned out slightly different because the sun was going down at an alarming rate haha. After lightening up some of the pictures, something really freaky happened to my face, like I look super pixelated and grainy but it's okay because the sunset is all that matters! When I went to Korea, I remember the Dr Martens store was so striking because the whole store was in some shiny white plastic, but everything was ridiculously expensive like around $300 and up for a pair. There was also so many knee high plaid boots, it was so cool.

I got my first pair of Dr Martens coincidentally during their 50th anniversary, and they took so long to break in, but after breaking in, they were super comfortable. Not to mention, so ideal to wear during winter because of the grip. I love the look of polished black leather, so I always try and shine them up when I get a chance. Mine has slight scuffing near the front because I don't really look where I'm walking most of the time, so I just keep tripping and tripping...

Eco-Style | Sustainable Fashion

Apart from big names that are sitting comfortably at the top of the fashion industry (such as LV, Chanel, Burberry, Christian Dior to name a few), do you know what else is climbing its' way up the fashion ladder? Yup, and that would be sustainable fashion (or green fashion).

Anyways, it's sustainability week here at the University of Alberta! I'm (Carmen) part of a student group called Eco-Style, and we basically promote sustainable fashion throughout the campus and around Edmonton. You can find the facebook page here. We really do encourage donating your unwanted but still wearable clothes, and to thrift shop for awesome fashion finds at a great price. It's friendly to the environment and plus...your wallet would probably thank you.

As well, a huge thank you to Alyssa Lau from the Ordinary Peoples blog for being one of our models for this shoot. Check out her look book and blog! The girl's got some impressive style goin' on! As well thanks to the committee, all the stylists, makeup artists, Henry, and all other models for helping out!

Doris and I helped out with the photoshoot and makeup, so keep scrolling down for images. The theme is pretty much like a vintage house party. All clothing items are from Goodwill.

PS. There will be a fashion show at the University of Alberta in SUB on November 16th. All clothing will be from Goodwill and will be styled by Eco-Style. Come check it out! Go green, everyone!
